Blog Do all polyurethane silentblocks and bushings squeak?

Rubber silentblocks and bushings begin to squeak when the rubber wears out. If the bushings of the VAZ 2101-2107 squeak unpleasantly, most often the reason is that the gap between the rubber and metal has increased. And why do polyurethane bushings and bushings squeak, even if they are new?

There are 2 reasons for this:

  1. if the polyurethane insert is not welded, but pressed, then scrolling is possible;
  2. if the polyurethane bushing is installed without sufficient lubrication.

Let's discuss these points in more detail.

When do polyurethane bushings squeak?

Reviews about the squeak of polyurethane bushings very often come from manufacturers who make the bushing and polyurethane separately, and then press them in.

In the bushing, the polyurethane insert should work on twisting, for which it should not scroll and rub against the clip. Otherwise, bushings of the rear beam squeak, for example. How to avoid it? The only reliable option is to hard-weld it into the outer and inner cage of the bushing.

This is exactly what PoliPro does, because our goal is to repeat the original exactly, so that using parts from this manufacturer is as reliable and comfortable as original parts. Therefore, we don't experiment with the design of the bushing, don't try to imitate the detail, but reproduce it scrupulously. All metal parts in PoliPro bushings are not pressed, but welded, and the assembly works as it was intended by the car manufacturer. Therefore, our bushings don’t peel off, including in the cold, and don't squeak.

Why do polyurethane stabilizer bushings squeak?

The second important point: there is an opinion that lubrication is not needed for the stabilizer bushing because this reduces the adhesion of the polyurethane to the metal surface and attracts dirt, which in turn accelerates wear. But any rotating and moving mechanism needs lubrication. If it is missing or not enough, friction of the surfaces occurs, which leads to the fact that the polyurethane stabilizer bushings squeak and wear out prematurely.

If we are talking about stabilizer bushings, then the stabilizer should not move along and across, but it should rotate. The bushing is designed to give a certain degree of freedom to the torsion movements of the stabilizer, so lubrication in this unit is necessary!

Factory original stabilizer bushings are coated with talc as a lubricant. Applying talc to finished products is somewhat problematic in a small production environment.

But to solve this problem, it is enough for you to generously lubricate it with a suitable lubricant before installing the polyurethane bushing:

  • silicone,
  • lithol,
  • solidol.

Polyurethane parts are inert and resistant to aggressive substances, unlike rubber bushings, for which the choice of lubricants is limited because petrochemicals can destroy the rubber structure. Therefore, the lubricant will not damage this assembly, but will additionally protect it from dirt and prevent dry friction. Thanks to the lubrication, there will be no squeaks and crunches, and the life of the bushing will be extended.

So, not all polyurethane bushings and silentblocks squeak. If the manufacturer takes into account the mechanical properties of materials, then polyurethane parts serve reliably and for a long time, making the ride comfortable.
