Blog Silent blocks: what is it and where are they used?

Blog What is a silent block? What is the difference between polyurethane bushings and rubber bushings? Design, types and selection of silent blocks!

Silent blocks are special hinges that are located in the chassis of the car. They reduce and soften the shocks that are transmitted from the body to the interior of the car. In addition, the hinges help to maintain the trajectory of movement chosen by the driver, which in turn affects the overall control of the transport.

What is a silent block

Design description

It became clear to us from the information described above why silent blocks are needed. But what is their design? In fact, it's very simple and consists of two metal clips connected to each other with a spacer, which is made of durable rubber or polyurethane. Silent blocks can be placed in the car in the following places:

  • Shock absorbers, engine, transmission.
  • Rear and front suspension arms.
  • Use of products as stabilizer bushings.

What types are the most popular

What are silent blocks responsible for? They are responsible for the smoothness of the car. But not many people know that several types of silent blocks are currently available on the market. They are of the following types:

  • Floating. Helps to achieve maximum cushioning and shock smoothing. Most often they are installed in suspension arms or hub knuckles.
  • Classic. The most common option with clips and a spacer. In some cases, not one, but two bushings may be used.
  • With eyelets. They are used instead of bushings. Changes have practically no effect on the chassis. Eyelets are specially made asymmetrical, so you should not worry.
  • With spacer inserts. They help to adjust the work of the suspension arm.

The buyer can choose any of these types. The main thing is that the products fit the current car.

What materials are silent blocks made of?

These products can be made not only from rubber, but also from polyurethane. Each of these materials has its pros and cons, which will be described below.

Rubber

Rubber silent blocks are classics and are used most often. They are installed at the factory. The positive aspects of these hinges look like this:

  • Good indicators of working capacity at deformations.
  • Affordable price for a wide range of people.

As for the cons, it is worth mentioning that rubber does not tolerate severe frosts and exposure to caustic chemicals with oils. Prolonged exposure to adverse conditions can completely destroy the rubber bushing.

Polyurethane

Such silent blocks provide better controllability of the car than rubber "brothers". If you install them on a regular car, the driver will immediately notice improvements. Here is the full list of pros:

  • The service life of the hinges is increased by several years, but only if they are installed correctly.
  • Increased resistance to adverse weather conditions and frequent hits on the suspension.
  • Better management.

Of the minuses, only a higher cost can be distinguished.
